This incredible instrument deserves to be better known
Can you write anything of any meaning in just 5 minutes? Particularly for an instrument you've never experienced before. That's what Zoë Marlew and myself tested in this episode when we met up with Mantawoman (aka Reylon Yount) who plays the Chinese Hammered Dulcimer called the Yangqin. And we had a lot of fun!

Is Einaudi’s music actually good?

Ludovico Einaudi is a composer I’ve always struggled to get along with. But he’s one of the most popular classical composers alive today. In this video I challenge myself to get to know his music better and see if I can come to some kind of understanding as to what it is I’m missing that so many other people enjoy in it. What is Classical Vaporwave?
Просмотров 383 тыс.9 месяцев назад
Vaporwave is a form of electronic music and internet culture that emerged in the 2010s. It generally involves stealing old tracks and slowing them down to create something weirdly nostalgic. So making a classical version it seems like a strange thing to do - but that's why I did, with the help of Daniel Hope and the Zurich Chamber Orchestra. From the first time i played this album, in the fall of 1968, living in LA Beverly Glen, this record has totally entranced me. i played it oppressively, for hours and days on end, although none of my friends then could get into it. so much so , that i wrote to warner bros, imploring them to keep van on contact. And they actually got back to me, saying, of course he was great, not to worry!' ...and my then roommate tore up the letter without me knowing... and where is he today, on crutches and unhappy guy, lonely and lost... and Astral Weeks is...

I remember fondly a BBC special with the violinist Isaac Stern, back in the black and white sixties. Asked if he played modern music, he replied, “I sometimes play modern music, so the composer can hear how awful it sounds” Little has changed in the intervening 60 years. When someone comes along who can write stuff as good as Bach, they’ll get my every attention. (I realise this view is cliched, but sadly it remains true for very many. Quite why new art and film are appreciated, as you point out, whereas new music isn’t, is something I’ll set my mind to.)

It's less the music than the twisted expectations of listeners. They have a constant diet of autotuned garbage so that's what they come to want. And the economic priority is to serve up what already made them money so the funnel gets more and more narrow and vanilla via algorithm.

"It doesn't demand anything"... Which is exactly why it isn't good music. If we all lived in a world that doesn't demand anything, we would know nothing, and we would deserve to be ignored by any sentient life out there... If a wallpaper background is all you want, just buy some. Artificial intelligence can mass-produce it, so It isn't all that expensive. Good music is good because it requires effort. The same effort that it takes to get to know another human being intimately. Of course people are free not to care about anything, if that's really what they want, but, trust me, that philosophy gets old very quickly.

Glenn Branca and the No Wave movement of the late 1970s to early 80s springs to mind. Likewise, the Residents. But there are lovely moments of wildness in Celtic music and many modern popular music... From The Beatles to Keith Jarrett to Marianne Faithful to Skinny Puppy.

I first heard Wozzeck on a DGG recording when I was 15, and my amazement with it has only increased in the decades since. If the Rite is the early 20th-century's most influential score, Wozzeck to my mind is the most original. It struck me years ago when I wrote a set of program notes for a production of "Cavellaria Rusticana" that Wozzeck's libretto shares some basic elements of verismo: Wozzeck and Marie, as human characters, are very believable. The libretto and tenor of Lulu are very different. Lulu's score is amazing, the work of a more mature composer, but its story doesn't strike the human chord that Wozzeck does. I am a Guinness fan as well. Thanks, David, for this excellent video - I especially loved your observation about the double-bass note in the sleeping soldiers' chorus. What struck me as a bird call in the field scene in Act 1, Scene 2 becomes a sleeping soldier's nasal hair!

I can't help feeling that the evolution of classical music has ground to a halt, in terms of relevance to a general audience. I guess it can be argued that, in Haydn's day, concerts were attended by the upper echelons of society but Mozart's later works were aimed at a more general audience and the audience for the Romantics was undoubtedly wide and mixed....you can't not like Brahms or Tchaikovsky. Personally, I like all early and mid Stravinsky but his later works leave me cold. 12-tone is a dead experiment and really only worked in some operas. Stockhausen was an attention-seeker. Glass is tedious and uninteresting. Music has to have an appeal, even on an intellectual level...it should be good to listen to. The listener should get something out of it, not be annoyed by it. I wonder whether the Romantic genre has really been exhausted. What about the idea of going back to Brahms and starting again, with knowledge of Debussy and Starvinsky to spice up the mix...? (I'd say that Britten probably did this...)

It seems to me that composers have been delusional (it's a fashioned word) thinking music can forever "progress" as science does, because it allowed each generations to shine despite their glorious predecessors. Tension needs release, even though balance can vary. And many classical ones wouldn't admit that jazz was the actual contemporary music of the last century... Until 1970, let's say
